Transitioning from warm summer days to cooler fall temperatures can require adapting your skincare routine to maintain healthy, hydrated skin. If your skin is anything like mine, changes in humidity and temperature can really throw your skin for a loop!
Here are some tips to help you achieve hydrated, clear skin that is not irritated during the fall season:
Regular Moisturization:
The cooler fall temperatures and lower humidity levels can cause dry skin. You may notice the skin on your face or body developing dry patches. Prevent these issues in the first place by using a hydrating moisturizer to nourish your skin and prevent moisture loss. Your skin may not be able to tolerate strong actives while it’s trying to adjust to a new norm, so it’s best to keep your facial regimen simple. Moisturize head to toe at least once a day after a shower or bath with lukewarm water. Curb the urge to bathe with hot water since it can strip moisture from your skin and leave you with itchy, dry skin.
Gentle Cleansing:
Make sure you use a mild, non-stripping cleanser that won't dry out your skin. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid/sodium hyaluronate or glycerin to maintain soft and supple skin.
Protection from pollens:
Depending on where you are located, you might be exposed to fall tree and weed pollens (hello ragweed!) which can aggravate allergies and cause your skin to become itchy and rashy, occasionally leading to eczema flares. Cover your skin with long pants and long-sleeved shirts when you’re spending time outdoors and remember to shower and change your clothes when you re-enter your home if you are prone to fall allergies. Wearing a hat and sunglasses outside can also be helpful at preventing nasal, eye and skin allergies.
Sun Protection:
Despite the sun feeling less intense in the fall, UV rays can still harm your skin. Remember to apply sunscreen daily (I usually recommend SPF 30 or higher), especially if you spend time outdoors.
Internal Hydration:
Keep your skin hydrated by drinking an ample amount of water and incorporating hydrating foods such as fruits and vegetables into your diet. Hydrated skin is healthy skin!
Be mindful about ingredients in your personal care products:
As with any season, it’s important to know exactly what you are putting on your skin and in your body. I encourage you to take a look at your personal care product ingredient lists to know what you are exposed to. Opt for products with shorter ingredient lists and try to understand what all of the ingredients do! Please understand that natural ingredients are not necessarily better and actually represent a huge category of reaction-provoking ingredients that can be hard on your skin!
By following these skincare tips, you can ensure that your skin remains healthy and moisturized during the fall weather transitions. Remember to pay attention to your skin's needs and adjust your routine accordingly. Check out the Evme 3-step regimen which has all the facial skincare you need to adjust to the fall season!
